Net Zero at World Water Week

Global water use, storage, and distribution contribute 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions (CDP, 2020). Tackling these emissions is fundamental to a prosperous future for people and planet.

At World Water Week, on 26 August,  we are gathering experts to present not only why the world should be looking to water for emission reduction opportunities but how to invest in water to enable resilient low emission development

We have also put together an overview of sessions throughout the Week that look at the emission reduction potential of water management, as well as innovative ways to harness this to unlock climate finance and sessions that seek to deepen knowledge in WINZ focus areas

Is your event missing? Email us and we will add it to the list.

WINZ | Water Solutions for a Resilient Net Zero Future

26 August 2024 | 11:00 - 12:30 CEST | Location: C1, Level 2 at World Water Week

This event presents why and how to invest in water to enable resilient low emission development. It will present solutions across agriculture, water, sanitation, energy and nature based solutions; policy triggers to overcome barriers and mainstream water into climate actions; and financing; including high integrity carbon credits and more.

Stacking benefits from Nature Based Solutions

Nature Based Solutions can provide ecosystem benefits, carbon benefits, water quality benefits, and they can reduce the impacts of wildfires, floods, and droughts. This panel will describe projects that have brought together unlikely partners and funding streams (such as NGOs, corporations, public agencies) to provide benefits to communities and ecosystems.

Reducing Carbon in Stormwater Infrastructure

This session will introduce key concepts to understand how carbon is quantified, measured, and reported, covering topics including Global Warming Potential (GWP) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). Then, we will discuss strategies to reduce carbon in green and grey stormwater infrastructure

BECCS beyond Carbon: Water and Land Use Impacts

BECCS (Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage) are mentioned in IPCC reports as examples of negative emission technologies allowing the long-term removal of CO2 in the atmosphere. This session will explore BECCS real contribution to carbon neutrality and the risks associated in terms of water, land use and biodiversity.

A changing climate from Source-to-Sea: Nature-based Solutions in transitional waters

Drawing from case studies and powerful initiatives, this session will examine the critical role of NbS for climate adaptation and mitigation in transitional waters, and their impact on the river basin as a whole, from its source to the sea. It will highlight the need for source-to-sea collaboration between a varied array of stakeholders, and present examples of NbS that included actors from different ends of the source-to-sea continuum.
