WINZ at COP28
The WINZ team was at COP to advocate for water as a climate solution – an essential component in our efforts to reduce emissions towards net zero. We did this through promoting efforts to mobilize investment to reduce and capture emissions through water; reduce water risks and promote win-win opportunities in carbon management; while ensuring climate action enhances water resilience.
Nearly all actions to reduce emissions or sequester greenhouse gases depend upon or impact water. Improved water management has the potential to add big wins (WINZ!) in the fight to slow climate change.
We went to COP28 for two reasons:
To build the WINZ network through a series of events as well as bilateral meetings to develop our working groups and to bring experts and advocates into the WINZ movement.
To demonstrate how and why including water in Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and net zero actions will help actors achieve their climate goals.
Water and Net Zero at COP28
The following events were either organised by WINZ or we had an active role in producing the event and curating the speakers and panels.
5 Dec | Watering Clean Energy Transition
COP28 Presidency, UK, Egypt, Japan, WMO, UNECE, UNESCO, the Alliance for Global Water Adaptation (AGWA) and the Water and Climate Leaders
This event highlighted how clean energy policies and planning can consider water availability to reduce water and energy risks as well as promote synergistic solutions, with a focus on national climate planning.
