Establishing Industry-Wide Guidance for Water Utility Life Cycle Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventories (2024-2026)

US Water Alliance

The overarching objective of the project is to develop a consensus-based, industry-facing guidance document and spreadsheet tool for water utility greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting. Recent research findings include studies demonstrating how anthropogenic nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions calculated using standard emission factors (EF) lead to underestimates of wastewater emissions and pilot improved methodologies in the United States. It provides a tool to recalibrate the estimations of wastewater N2O emissions, which form the foundation of carbon footprint reduction in wastewater treatment.
