Net Zero Water Utility Roadmap – with Cases in Europe, Australia and Asia

Xylem

Overview

A series of case examples are featured on Xylem’s net zero water utility roadmap. Utility case studies include Scottish Water, Beijing Drainage Group, Flanders Netherlands, Auckland, Australia; Santiago, Chile; and Essen, Germany.

Solutions

The case studies presented highlight how utilities can take steps towards net-zero with advice on how to:

1. Set Realistic Targets; 2. Optimize Existing Assets, Prioritize Capital Planning and 4. Plan for the Future.

The case studies present several key insights:

  • Don’t set a net-zero target without accurate baseline data. Reduce carbon wherever you can and measure the impact — once you fill data gaps, tangible targets can follow.

  • Connect with your City or County to align on regional net-zero goals. Solo runs are of limited value. Collaborative net-zero efforts will achieve outsized results.

  • Embed decarbonization goals into all technology proposals and agreements. Optimize assets to deliver operational efficiencies and sustainability wins.

  • Rethink Return on Investment (ROI). Reframe your costbenefit analyses for new projects to account for long-term carbon reduction.
